On the morning of June 24 local time, a fire broke out at the Aricell battery factory located in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea.

According to the Hwaseong Fire Incident Investigation Headquarters on June 26, only the identities of three victims have been confirmed so far, all of whom are South Korean nationals. The identities of the remaining 20 victims cannot be confirmed through fingerprints due to the severe damage to their bodies.

Aricell, a lithium battery manufacturer under South Korea's SK Group, was established in 2020 and produces lithium batteries used in sensors and wireless communication devices. Aricell's annual production capacity accounts for approximately 1.25% of South Korea's total annual battery production capacity.

The affected factory complex has a total of 11 buildings, and the fire occurred on the second floor of Building 3, covering an area of 1,185 square meters. This area is specifically used for inspecting and packaging finished lithium batteries and houses over 35,000 lithium batteries. It is reported that at the time of the incident, workers were inspecting and packaging batteries in the facility.

The site is used for packaging military single-use batteries. According to the police investigation, on the first floor of Building 2, the battery temperature rose sharply while workers were injecting electrolyte into the batteries, leading to the fire. The husband of one of the female victims, Mr. Park (36), publicly shared chat records with his wife, stating, "The factory was smoking, and the alarm went off twice. Everyone was very panicked," and in an interview, he expressed, "If measures had been taken then..." This highlights the importance of addressing battery storage safety issues.
